For the past 125 years, the Sugar Industry has been at the heart of Fiji’s economy and socio-political history. It is a major export earner for Fiji, amounting to almost a quarter of the nation's foreign exchange. It plays a major role in providing employment to tens of thousands in the workforce.

Sugar Cane grows on the lee side coastlines (west-facing) of the larger islands, and those who travel to Fiji will see the cane fields in abundance around the Nadi area, Nadi being the main port of entry for tens of thousands of tourists annually. The main growing season is from around December through to June, with the hotter and wetter ' summer ' months of January to March contributing to rapid growth during this time. Cutting commences from around June/July through November, and one can see much activity in the cane fields, with farming labourers toiling at the exhausting task of cutting tonnes of cane and transporting it to the nearest sugar mills, such as Lautoka, Ba, and Labasa.

Small narrow gauge tracks traverse the countryside and sugar cane trains, hauling cart after cart of cut sugar cane make their way to the mills. Trucks are also used to shift the lengths of cane. Often the farmers will 'burn' the cane fields to make cutting easier, but if this strategy is used, the burnt cane must reach the mill quickly to ensure the quality does not deteriorate too much. This Fiji panorama shows a close up view of the cut ends of burnt cane stacked and ready for its final journey to be processed at the mill prior to export.
