Fiji Islands is often termed the 'crossroads of the South Pacific'. It is one of the largest centres of the region with a population of around 905,000 (estimated 2005-2006) and its capital - Suva - is a busy port and commercial city. It also attracts tourists though is not the main centre for tourism in the Fiji Islands. With increased economic expansion during the past few years, the City of Suva has seen the growth of modern development.

This panorama was taken from the Tamavua area of Suva to the north of the City. Tamavua Ridge extends from Samabula northwards and offers those on the top of the ridge, or on its western slopes, magnificent views over Suva and Suva Harbour. This panorama shows the Port on the right hand side and the main Central Business District (CBD) with its high rise buildings. One can also see the outer reef of Suva Harbour.

The Fiji Capital of Suva is a cosmopolitan city and has a population of over 80,000 people. With business offices, a bustling wharf and colourful market close by, the city is a vibrant centre for residents and tourists alike. With a Colonial heritage, the city boasts excellent examples of Colonial architecture, that sit comfortably alongside modern office block developments. The main street is Victoria Parade and one can find government offices, shops, restaurants, main post office and commercial departments along its busy thoroughfare. The Suva port sees a mixture of commercial tankers, international cruise boats, and roll-on roll-off ferries that carry freight and passengers to the outer islands. At the southern end of Victoria Parade, one passes by the old Parliament Buildings, whose clock-face is a well-known landmark, and further on one can see the Presidential Palace (built in 1928), which is the home of Fiji's president. The Fijian Guards on duty at the entrance gate, with colourful uniform of red jacket and white pointed sulu, make a great photo opportunity.

Suva is surrounded by rugged highlands, and from the City one can view these across the harbour and Bay of Islands, including a landmark peak known as Joske's Thumb.
