Joske's Thumb - Panoramas Pictures of Suva

Joske's Thumb

Pictures from Suva City

Suva, the capital of the Republic of Fiji Islands, is a picturesque, modern, busy city, located on a peninsula on the south-east coastline of the main island - Viti Levu. It is a thriving commercial hub of the South Pacific. It has an outer reef that forms a naturally protected harbour - Suva Harbour - and has a backdrop of rugged highlands.

Of particular note is a prominent peak called Joske's Thumb - a precipitous lava plug - that rises majestically on the horizon to the west. An interesting note is that the noted mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary was defeated in his first attempts to climb the peak and of course he later went on to scale the world's highest mountain - Everest. Hillary did return to Fiji, however, and managed to conquer the 'thumb' many years later.Today, it still appeals to climbers, who are challenged by its rugged form. Joske's Thumb is also the location for many species of birds, such as the Masked Shining Parrot and Gian Forest Honeyeaters, making it a popular destination for birders from around the world.

Joske's Thumb gets its name from Mr Adolph Brewster Brewster, who had later changed his name to Joske's. The Brewster family were noted for their pioneering work in establishing the sugar industry, including the importation of machinery for Fiji's first sugar mill. Mr Brewster eventually retired back to the UK, where he died in 1937.
